Born and trained in the North of England, Deborah Poynton travelled in Europe and Africa before settling in Dorset. This is where her artistic talent flowered and much of her work has been exhibited and sold. During September and October last year, she travelled to Boston, Massachusetts, to collect material from the magnificent Cape Cod area as well as Vermont – renowned in “The fall”. This trip extended the range of places where her work is hung, which include Japan, New Zealand and South Africa. Harrods have also provided a good outlet in the City.
The dynamics of picture construction and simplification of forms as taught by Robin Child are remembered with gratitude, and training. The eye to criticize one’s own work constructively under the patient tuition of Sam Rabin over several years has proved invaluable. Derek Gardner R.S.M.A, offered great encouragement as well as basic advice during the early years of her artistic career.
While preferring oils on canvas for landscapes, she has a delicate touch with pastels for portraits and some of her fine pencil drawings of animals have gone onto print.
Her speciality is river landscapes, often with low horizons in order to give a great expanse of sky – the billowing cloud formations adding a special dimension to the pictures. Trees and fields, bridges and buildings evoke the same sense of timeless tranquillity which flows from Hardy’s descriptions of his beloved Wessex.
